
Keeping Gamefowl Cool: The Tethered-Bird Problem

Why This Is a Gamefowl-Specific Problem
Chickens do not sweat. They shed heat through the comb, wattles and unfeathered skin, and by panting — see chicken anatomy.

A tethered bird or one in an individual pen cannot do any of it. The same constraint applies in layer cages, and it is why heat is the leading cause of preventable loss in both systems.
So the layout has to supply what the bird cannot fetch.
Siting and Shade
- Shade over every bird position, not over most of them. Check at noon and mid-afternoon, when the sun is where it actually matters — a spot shaded at 9am can be fully exposed at 2pm.
- Track the sun across the day. Tree shade moves; roof shade does not.
- Roof material and height matter. A low uninsulated iron roof radiates heat downward through the afternoon and into the evening — the same mechanism that kills late-cycle broilers at night, per broiler mortality causes.

Airflow Matters as Much as Shade
Panting only works when moving air carries moisture away. Still, humid air in deep shade is still a problem.
- Do not block airflow with solid walls on the windward side where you do not need them.
- Space birds so air moves between positions rather than through one hot pocket.
- Watch for still corners — the spot behind a shed, the end of a row against a wall.
- Ventilation at bird level, not just overhead — see coop ventilation.
Water
- Every bird, all the time. In an individual system there is no shared drinker to fall back on if one is empty.
- In the shade. Water in the sun gets hot and is drunk less, exactly when it is needed most.
- Refreshed, not left standing all day.
- Check in the evening as well as the morning. A hot day empties a drinker faster than you expect.

Adjusting the Work
This is where heat intersects with conditioning.
- Work in the cooler hours — early morning or late afternoon. Working birds at midday is the most avoidable cause of heat loss on a game farm.
- Reduce or stop work in extreme heat. A programme is not worth a dead bird.
- Never work a bird showing heat stress, and do not spar one.

- Avoid transport in the heat of the day, and never leave birds in a closed vehicle.

In an individual-pen system you have to go and look. A bird in trouble cannot come to you, and the birds at the hot end of a row are the ones that will not be noticed unless you walk it.
