The Four Things the Design Must Get Right

1. Floor slope

The single most important dimension, and where homemade cages usually fail.

  • Too flat: eggs stay in the cage, get stepped on, soiled and broken.
  • Too steep: eggs roll fast, hit the channel or each other, and crack.
  • Right: the egg leaves the bird’s area promptly and arrives gently.

Build a single test cage first and roll real eggs down it before you build twenty. Adjust the slope until eggs arrive intact and none stay behind. This is an afternoon’s work that saves a permanent problem.

2. Feeder and drinker access

  • Feed trough along the cage front, at a height every bird can reach without straining.
  • Nipple or cup drinkers sized and positioned so every bird in the cage can drink without competing. Water intake drives feed intake, which drives lay — a bird that cannot reach water stops producing before it looks unwell.
  • Enough length per bird that a dominant hen cannot block the others.
  • Trough shape that keeps feed in rather than letting birds bill it onto the floor.

3. Manure handling

Droppings fall through the floor, and then they are your problem.

4. Heat

This is the one that kills flocks in the Philippines.

A caged hen cannot walk to shade, cannot find a cool patch of ground, cannot move to a breeze. Everything the bird would do for itself, the building has to do:

  • Roof insulation or a second shade layer. An uninsulated iron roof radiates heat down onto the top tier all afternoon and into the evening.

  • Orientation to catch prevailing wind and avoid the low afternoon sun on the long side.

Space, Materials and Practicalities

  • Wire gauge and mesh size: strong enough not to sag under the birds, fine enough that feet are supported rather than sinking. Sagging floors ruin the egg roll.
  • Foot health. Constant wire contact is the drawback of the system — check feet regularly for bumblefoot.
  • Corrosion. Manure and humidity destroy poor wire and untreated steel. Buy once.
