Why This Matters More Than It Seems

Three Designs That Work

1. Bucket with cups or nipples. A lidded bucket with cup drinkers or nipple drinkers fitted near the base. Water stays enclosed and clean, birds drink on demand, and there is no open surface to foul.

  • Cheap, holds a day or more, easy to refill.
  • Needs birds to learn it — usually quick, but watch new birds and chicks.
  • Check nipples for blockage and drips.

2. Inverted bottle or bucket over a shallow tray. The classic gravity design: an inverted vessel with a small gap at the base refills a shallow tray as birds drink.

  • Very cheap, easily made from a bucket and a basin.
  • Open tray means it fouls, so it needs raising and daily cleaning.
  • Works without birds learning anything new.

3. Shaded open pan. Simplest of all, and only acceptable if you will actually refresh it several times a day.

  • Fouls fastest, warms fastest.
  • Fine as a second point in a shaded spot, poor as the only drinker.

The Four Rules

1. Raise it to about the height of the birds’ backs. Low drinkers get litter scratched into them and get stood in. Raising one is the single change that most improves water cleanliness.

2. Keep it shaded. Always. Water in Philippine sun gets hot, birds drink less of it, and the whole point is lost.

3. Make it impossible to perch over. Birds foul what they roost above. A sloped or narrow top, or a design with no landing surface, prevents it.

Chicks Are a Different Problem

Chicks drown in very little water.

  • Use a shallow chick drinker, or
  • Add clean pebbles or marbles to a deeper one so the surface is broken and a chick cannot submerge.
  • Place it at the cool end of the brooder, away from the heat source.
  • Show them the water on arrival — dip a few beaks and the rest follow. Water before feed, always.

Enough Drinking Points

Cleaning and Water Quality

  • Change water daily, more in heat or when fouled.
  • Scrub, do not just rinse. A slimy film forms quickly in warm conditions and birds drink less from a fouled vessel.
