- Cool it gradually. Cool, not iced — a heat-stressed bird plunged into cold water can go into shock. Damp the feet, legs and comb, and let air movement do the rest.
- Do not force water into the beak. A weak bird can inhale it. Offer, do not pour.
- Keep it quiet and unhandled once it is cooling. Handling is itself a heat load.
- Watch it for the rest of the day. Birds that seem to recover can relapse.
