Designing a Chicken Run That Stays Usable

TL;DR: Every run goes bare, then muddy, then parasite-heavy unless the design fights it. Roof at least part of it — shade, dry ground and aerial-predator protection in one move. Fine mesh, not ordinary chicken wire, and a skirt of wire laid flat outward at the base against diggers. Grade the drainage before you need it. Then put something in there — shade, dust bath, scratching material — because birds with nothing to do start on each other.

The Predictable Decline

A new run has grass. It will not for long, and it is worth knowing the sequence so you can design against it:

  1. Vegetation goes, quickly, because birds strip and scratch it.
  2. Bare earth, compacted around the door and the feeder.
  3. Mud, once it rains on bare compacted ground.
  4. A parasite reservoir, because the same ground carries the same birds continuously — the mechanism behind much of the worm burden and gapeworm risk in outdoor systems.

Nothing stops this entirely. What slows it down is space, drainage, roofing and rotation.

Roof Part of It

The single highest-value decision, because one roof solves three problems:

A fully open run here becomes unusable in heavy rain, and the birds end up crowded in the house instead. Roofing the section nearest the pop hole, where traffic concentrates, gets most of the benefit for the least material.


Wire and the Base

Use fine mesh, not ordinary large-opening chicken wire. Chicken wire keeps chickens in. It does very little against:

At the base, something is needed against digging. Buried wire works; a skirt of wire laid flat on the ground extending outward from the fence works too and is far easier to install — a digging animal starts at the fence line, hits wire, and generally gives up.

At the top, either roof it or run wire over it. Many predators climb.

Drainage

Grade the ground so water runs away from the run and away from the house, and do it when you build rather than after the first storm.

Specific wet points to design for:

  • The pop hole, where every bird walks every day.
  • Around the waterer, which is the wettest spot in any setup. Put it on hard standing, or on slats with drainage under.
  • Low corners, which become permanent puddles and permanent parasite habitat.

Rotation, If You Can

Two runs used alternately, or a movable fence, lets ground rest and recover. Resting breaks parasite cycles in a way nothing else does short of medication.

If you cannot rotate:

  • Add fresh material to the worst areas — sand, gravel or dry litter over compacted mud.
  • Rake and turn the surface where practical.
  • Keep density down. Crowding is what accelerates the whole decline.

Put Something In It

An empty rectangle of dirt is where feather pecking starts. Birds with nothing to do turn on each other — see the pecking order.

Worth having:

  • Shade, natural or built.
  • A dry dust-bathing area. Dust bathing is how birds manage their own mites and lice, and a covered dry patch means they can do it in the wet season too.
  • Something to scratch through — leaf litter, straw, garden trimmings.
  • Greens, hung or scattered.
  • Water in the shade, and more than one point if the flock is large.
  • Something to get behind, so a bullied bird can break line of sight.

Size It Generously

Every problem above — bare ground, mud, parasites, pecking — gets worse as density rises, and better with space. The figures in coop space per bird are minimums for the house; for a run, more is straightforwardly better.

If space is tight, roofing and drainage matter more, and rotation matters most of all.


The Honest Limits Here

The decline of concentrated outdoor ground, the parasite implications of continuous stocking, and the exclusion methods described are standard poultry-keeping practice.
