Fowl Cholera: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Fowl cholera can kill suddenly without warning. Learn the symptoms and the 6-day treatment protocol using Sulpar QR and Premoxil.

What is Fowl Cholera?

Fowl cholera is caused by the Pasteurella multocida bacteria. It is one of the most dangerous poultry diseases because it can kill birds without any warning — sometimes you simply wake up to find a bird dead.

You need to act immediately if you notice any suspicious symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Sudden death — sometimes this is the first sign, the bird dies overnight
  • Greenish-yellow diarrhea
  • Swollen wattles and joints
  • Difficulty breathing (labored breathing)
  • Darkening comb and wattles (turning purple)
  • Loss of appetite, listlessness (depression)

Warning: If a bird dies suddenly without a clear cause, suspect cholera immediately. Check the rest of your flock for symptoms.

Treatment Protocol: Sulpar QR + Premoxil (6 Days)

Sulpar QR is specifically indicated for the treatment of fowl cholera caused by Pasteurella multocida.

Recovery Phase

DayMedication
Day 7–9Vitmin Pro — 10g per gallon of water, daily

Prevention

  • Biosecurity — limit the people and animals entering your farm area
  • Isolate newly arrived birds before introducing them to the flock
  • Dispose of dead birds properly — bury or burn them, do not simply discard them
  • Disinfect everything after an outbreak

Golden Rules for Treatment

  1. Never mix Sulpar QR and Premoxil in the same water. Sulpar QR in the morning, Premoxil in the afternoon — keep them separate.
  2. Do not mix medication with Vitmin Pro on the same day during treatment. Give Vitmin Pro only during the recovery phase (after the treatment protocol).
  3. Always use freshly prepared medicated water each day. Do not reuse yesterday's mix.
  4. Remove all other water sources during treatment to ensure the birds drink the medicated water.
  5. Isolate sick birds immediately from the healthy flock — do not wait.
  6. Complete the entire treatment course even if the bird looks fine by Day 2. Stopping early risks creating drug-resistant bacteria.
  7. Prevention is better than treatment. Keep the coop clean, sand dry, deworm regularly, and vaccinate properly.
