Why the Thermostat Is the One Thing to Buy

Because stability, not accuracy, is what hatches eggs.

A build without proper control does this: heater on, temperature climbs past target, heater off, temperature falls well below target, heater on again. Average it over an hour and it looks like 37.5°C. The embryos experienced 39 and then 36, repeatedly, for three weeks.

Heat Source, and Fire Safety

The classic homemade heat source is an incandescent bulb — but most bulbs sold today are LED and produce almost no heat, so check what you actually have. Ceramic heat emitters and heating elements are also used.

Non-negotiable rules whatever you use:

  • Thermostat-controlled, never wired directly to the mains.
  • Mounted so it cannot touch the box, bedding, or anything flammable.
  • Wiring properly insulated, with no bare joints inside a humid box.
  • A humid environment and electricity need care. Keep connections outside the box or fully sealed.
  • Never leave the first test run unattended. Run the empty box for at least 24 hours where you can see it.

Fan or No Fan?

Both work. They are different machines with different targets:

Humidity and Ventilation

Humidity: water surface area, not volume. A wide shallow tray raises humidity more than a deep cup with the same water. Target 50–55% for days 1–18 and 65–75% at lockdown — see incubator humidity.

In a humid Philippine room you may need less water than the guides assume, sometimes none. Build in a way that lets you reduce water surface easily.

Ventilation: embryos consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, so a sealed box eventually suffocates them. Small holes near the bottom and near the top give gentle airflow. Make them adjustable — plugs or tape — because ventilation is also your only tool for reducing humidity.


Turning

Mechanical turners are the hardest part to build well, and hand-turning works perfectly:

  • 3–5 times a day, an odd number so eggs do not rest on the same side two nights running.
  • Mark one side of each egg with a pencil so you can see at a glance which have been turned.
